As the festive season draws nearer, this also means that mgidi season is approaching for Xhosa people, and other tribes that may be having traditional celebrations during this time.

This is reflective of an approaching time where people will be merry and celebrate. What is a better way to celebrate traditions, if not traditional music?

‘Umgidi’ is a celebration that comes after a successful initiation of a boy transitioning to manhood. An initiation ceremony is a rite of passage that marks the transition into adulthood. During this celebration ceremony, there are songs that are sung to make the experience enjoyable and wholesome for the family, loved ones and friends of the family.

If you are having umgidi at your home or area, here are the songs to keep the crowd entertained:

This song, is mostly sung by the youth.

Titled Mercedes, the song has captured the crowd in different events.

This song has been sung on many occasions, particularly umgidi. Titled Igama Lakho, the song is easy to learn and keeps the crowd entertained. Musician Mr Vee Sholo, known to record existing traditional songs, also has this song recorded to preserve it for the coming generation.
