Sundowns and Chiefs leading all local clubs

Mamelodi Sundowns, who have played one more match than Kaizer Chiefs, have scored more goals than any other team in Mzansi: 19 in 12 games. The series includes seven wins, four draws and just one defeat in 12 games.

Some of the victories were vintage Kabo Yellow domination, a 3-0 cruise past Magesi FC on 14 September, the 3-1 job on Durban City six days later, and that 4-1 dismantling of Richards Bay on 27 September shows exactly why they sit at the top of the goals-scored charts.

KAIZER CHIEFS TOUGH TO OPEN UP

Amakhosi, meanwhile, are building their season on something less glamorous: clean sheets.

It has been no less than seven clean sheets from 11 matches played: against Stellenbosch FC, Polokwane City, Richards Bay, Sundowns, Golden Arrows, Siwelele FC and Durban City.

Only four sides have breached Kaizer Chiefs’ defence and goalkeeper Brandon Petersen so far: Sekhukhune United in that surprise 3-1 defeat, Marumo Gallants and AmaZulu in 1-1 draws, and Orbit College in Amakhosi’s 4-1 win.

CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE AND CONFEDERATION CUP FOCUS

In the meantime, neither side is thinking about the Betway Premiership right now. The CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup group stage kicks off after the current FIFA international break.

Sundowns’ players will return from Bafana Bafana duty with DR Congo’s Saint-Eloi Lupopi in mind. The clash is on Saturday, 22 November at 15:00 at Loftus Versfeld.

Amakhosi will kick off the business end of the competition with a tough away date in Port Said, Egypt, to battle Al Masry on Sunday, 23 November. The game is set for an 18:00 kick off at the Suez Stadium.
