World Diabetes Day, observed on 14 November, raises awareness about diabetes and its impact across all stages of life.
The Gauteng Department of Health will commemorate the day in Soweto, urging early screening and workplace awareness.
MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko will lead the event, encouraging communities to adopt healthier lifestyle choices.

Commemorated annually on the 14th of November, World Diabetes Day aims to raise awareness about diabetes as a critical global public health issue.

This chronic illness can impact people across all stages of life, including childhood, the reproductive years, working age, and older adulthood.

The theme of this year’s World Health Organisation’s World Diabetes Day is “Diabetes Across Life Stages,” which recognises that every person living with diabetes should have access to integrated care, supportive environments, and policies that promote health, dignity, and self-management.

Meanwhile, locally, the Gauteng Department of Health will observe this day on Thursday in Soweto to promote healthier lifestyle choices and encourage early screening to reduce the risk of severe health diseases.

Under the slogan “Know more and do more for diabetes at work,” the Health Department has called on employers to raise awareness about the challenges people with diabetes face in the workplace, such as stigma, discrimination, and misconceptions.

The Department further emphasised that early detection through regular screening is crucial, especially for individuals aged 35 to 75 who are overweight or obese, as they are at higher risk for developing Type 2 diabetes.

“Additionally, monitoring blood glucose (HbA1c) levels is essential for assessing diabetes management, as poorly controlled diabetes can lead to serious health issues. As a result, the Department has intensified efforts to monitor diabetes control performance across facilities,” said Gauteng Health Spokesperson, Nokuthula Hlophe.

In 2024, the overall diabetes control rate in Gauteng has remained steady at around 65%, showing that just over six in ten monitored patients achieve reasonable glycaemic control.

Thursday’s event in Soweto will highlight the importance of a holistic approach to managing diabetes that addresses physical, mental, and social challenges.

Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, will lead the commemorative event and mobilise community members to make healthier life choices.
