Gauteng police have launched a manhunt after a man was fatally shot while driving on the N1 North in Pretoria on Monday afternoon. The shooting caused heavy traffic delays around 17h30 as police responded to the scene.
Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Mavela Masondo, confirmed that the victim, found in the driver’s seat of a Toyota Hilux bakkie, was certified dead at the scene.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim is a security officer. The motive for the killing remains unknown at this stage, and police are appealing to anyone with information to come forward,” said Masondo.
This incident follows a string of recent fatal shootings in Gauteng, including the murder of Molefe Moekeletsi, Chairperson of the Alexandra Midrand Randburg Taxi Association, and the killing of six people in Reiger Park, east of Johannesburg, linked to alleged turf wars.
These cases have intensified concerns over the rise in violent shootings and the illegal use of firearms in the province.
