It has been just over a year since the sudden passing of the veteran actress Connie Chuime, yet the evidence of her work continues to be appreciated.
This year calls for a celebration for the Chuime family, as the Black Panther and Meet the Khumalos actress will soon be honoured for her years in the performing arts, with a Lifetime Achievement posthumous award.
This award will be presented courtesy of the Directors Guild of South Africa (DGSA). 2025 marks the first annual DGSA Creative Awards, and will be hosted in Cape Town from 28 to 29 November.
The organisation recently released a statement explaining that the decision to honour the late actress was made with the intent of not only celebrating her legacy, but also showing gratitude for how she was able to bring to life the stories of ordinary South Africans.
In a statement, they added:
“Mhe Connie Chiume made us look good as directors because she translated our narratives with passion, precision, and creative brilliance.”
“Her craft made our visions possible, her interpretations gave our stories heart, and her presence elevated every frame she touched,” the organisation said.
Meanwhile, in conversation with TshisaLive, her son Nongelo described the moment as being bittersweet.
“It will always be a bittersweet moment because it’s moments like these where you would wish they were present to witness their recognition. It speaks to the almost 50 years of work and contribution to the arts.”
