  • City Power has announced an 8-hour planned power interruption affecting parts of Johannesburg.
  • The outage is due to essential maintenance work at the Olivedale substation.
  • Suburbs including Northriding, Northworld, and Sharonlea will be affected.

Certain residents in the City of Johannesburg will be subjected to more than 8 hours of no electricity on Monday due to maintenance work taking place at the Olivedale substation.

This was confirmed by the local power supplier, City Power, on Monday, 27 October 2025.

The maintenance will affect certain suburbs, including Northriding, Northworld, and Sharonlea.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena says the power interruption is necessary to conduct essential maintenance on the supplier’s network.

“City Power regrets any inconveniences that may be encountered during this maintenance work,” he said.

“It is important to remind customers that this is not an unplanned outage or a blackout, as some are already incorrectly describing it. It is just part of our job to ensure that we minimise those outages.”
