Orlando Pirates were eliminated in the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League despite a 3-0 victory over Saint Eloi Lupopo.
Having lost the first leg 3-0 away from home, the Buccaneers needed to win by at least 4-0 to advance to the group stages. Playing at home, they enjoyed strong support from the Orlando crowd but struggled to break through the stubborn Lupopo defence.
The Sea Robbers fought hard and scored a goal in the first half, but more drama unfolded in the second half when Pirates netted two more goals, forcing a penalty shootout. Ultimately, the Congolese side edged out Orlando Pirates 5-4 on penalties, advancing to the CAF Champions League group stages for the first time in their history.
Abdeslam Ouaddou and his team now shift their focus back to the Betway Premiership as they aim to secure their first PSL title in 13 years.
How did Orlando Pirates lose the match?
Lack of a target man
Abdeslam Ouaddou’s decision not to start with a striker backfired. The Buccaneers were forced to take shots from wide positions, but most of their attempts went off-target.
When they did hit the target, the goalkeeper made crucial saves, and Bucs players failed to react to the rebounds. Having players like Evidence Makgopa or Tshegofatso Mabasa might have helped them secure another goal.
Sebelebele’s poor performance
Kamogelo Sebelebele appeared to be a shadow of his usual self during the match. In fact, the speedy winger has struggled since Orlando Pirates won the MTN8, where he played a key role in helping the team retain the trophy.
On this occasion, he often failed to deliver quality crosses despite finding himself in promising positions. His first touch and passing were particularly questionable throughout the season.
Poor game management and mentality
Although the fans rallied behind the Buccaneers, at times the players seemed lacking in urgency. In the first half, they created only a handful of chances, and if Tshepang Moremi had maintained his composure, Orlando Pirates could have played with a man advantage.
