A loud explosion from a cash-in-transit heist terrified learners and teachers at Phomolong Secondary School on SM Songo Avenue in Tembisa on Wednesday morning.

Criminals bombed the cash-in-transit van, injuring a Fidelity security guard who was rushed to hospital.

Moshe Mohlala, a community leader and crime activist, was among the first to arrive at the scene.

He told Scrolla.Africa that as the suspects made their getaway, they fired shots at police officers who had responded to the incident.

“While shooting at the police, the suspects also hit a passing motorist, who was later taken to hospital,” Mohlala said.

The heist happened just outside the school gates, and the loud explosion frightened learners in their classrooms.

No one from the school was injured.

An eyewitness reported that a passing taxi was also shot at, but only the driver was inside, and he escaped unharmed.

The taxi had two bullet holes, and the driver approached the police for compensation for the damage.

Many residents gathered at the scene as police cordoned off the area. Specialised police units, including the bomb squad and forensic investigators, responded to the scene.
