Cops arrested a 72-year-old woman for dealing drugs on Sunday during Operation Shanela in Kraaifontein, Cape Town.
SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie said police carried out a search warrant at a house in Scottsville, Kraaifontein, after receiving information about illegal drug dealing.
“When officers arrived, they searched the house and found a large quantity of drugs, including mandrax tablets and cocaine,” said Pojie.
Police also found an undisclosed amount of cash, believed to be from drug sales.
Pojie said the 72-year-old woman was arrested and will appear in the Bluedowns Magistrates’ Court once charged.
Nasiphi Tanana, a Kraaifontein resident, was shocked that a pensioner could be involved in such crimes.
“I couldn’t believe it because she gets a pension from the government. At her age, she shouldn’t be breaking the law,” said Tanana.
In a separate case, officers in Lwandle arrested a 42-year-old Nigerian man on the same day at his home in Chante Heights, Strand.
He was found with 437 mandrax tablets, some crushed mandrax powder, a scale, and cash, also believed to be linked to drug dealing.
He is set to appear in the Strand Magistrates’ Court.
