Armed men shot two people dead and wounded three others at a tavern near Hammanskraal on Monday morning.

Patrons were sitting at the drinking spot in Makhanjani in Bridgeview, Temba, when unknown men walked in and opened fire.

Peter Selwane, who witnessed the attack, described it as being like a scene from a violent film.

“The suspects knew who they were looking for and where to find them as they went straight to where they were sitting,” he said.

“The men stormed the tavern armed with what looked like rifles; one of the deceased men was on his cellphone when they started shooting.

“The few people in the tavern ran for cover until we heard the screeching sound of the tyres of a car driving off.”

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said two people were declared dead at the scene while three others were rushed to hospital with gunshot wounds.

“The motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage; cases of murder and attempted murder have been opened for further investigations.

“We request anyone with information that can assist with the investigations to contact their local police station.

“They can also call the Crime Stop line on 08600 10111,” she said.
