The Gauteng Department of Education said it is fully prepared for the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams.
A total of 189,693 learners in the province will start writing their Grade 12 exams on Monday 21 October with the last paper scheduled for 28 November 2024.
136,051 are full-time students while 53,642 are part-time or repeat candidates.
This is a slight 0.78% decrease compared to the number of learners who wrote the exams in 2023.
During a media briefing on Monday, Gauteng MEC for Education Matome Chiloane confirmed that the department is focused on running the exams with credibility, integrity, and efficiency and making sure no technical issues happen.
“The class of 2023 achieved an 85.4% pass rate, making us the third highest-performing province. When comparing the performance of the class of 2024, we are on track to continue this upward trend,” Chiloane said.
He said that this group of students began their schooling in 2013.
All learners will sign a pledge before the exams, committing to follow the NSC Examination Code of Conduct.
Strict security measures are in place to prevent any leaks of exam papers. Service providers have been hired to support security in districts, including armed escorts, response units, and CCTV monitoring for the entire exam period.
Chiloane also told parents and the community to avoid any disruptions that could impact learners’ studies or access to exam centres.
He warned that students who cause disruptions will be removed from the exams, while those involved in dishonest conduct will have their results cancelled and could be banned from future exams depending on the severity.
