South Africa defeated Bangladesh to go top of Group B in the ICC T20 Women’s World Cup standings on Saturday.

The Proteas were asked to chase in Dubai; and the bowlers did their job to restrict Bangladesh to just 106/3 in their 20 overs.

Dilara Akter’s first over dismissal set the tone as Marizanne Kapp and Nonkululeko Mlaba slowed the run-rate to set-up a straightforward chase.

Captain Laura Wolvaardt’s early dismissal gave Bangladesh a glimmer of hope, but Tazmin Brits claimed the player of the match award with an important 42 off 41 to strengthen South Africa’s hopes of making the last four.

“I am never satisfied with what I’m doing, I keep wanting more but I think it was actually a difficult wicket out there, so I am proud of myself,” Brits said post-match.

“To represent your country in a world stage like this, it means a lot. Let’s hope we go through to the semi-final.”

Sunday’s double header will be crucial for both groups as England look to continue their unbeaten streak against Scotland before India take on Australia in a top of the tree Group A clash.
