uMsunduzi – Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, has informed the portfolio committee, led by Dr Zweli Mkhize, that he supports the idea of turning uMsunduzi Municipality into a metro. This change would bring more funding to uMsunduzi from the national government. Buthelezi praised the council for their leadership and efforts to improve the municipality, especially since it was previously under Section 139 intervention due to poor governance.
Durban – Water restrictions have begun in the eThekwini Municipality. Following an order from the national Department of Water and Sanitation, the uMngeni-uThukela Water Board and eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba announced that they must reduce water usage by 8.4%.
Pietermaritzburg – Mntomuhle Khawula, the MEC for Sports, Arts, and Culture, plans to revive efforts to make the eMakhosini area, where seven Zulu kings are buried, a World Heritage Site. This follows a request from Peace Mabe, the Deputy Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, asking the province to renew its bid for the recognition.
Pietermaritzburg – Sihle Kubheka, 30, has been charged with the murder of Constable Oscar Makhathini. He was arrested on 8 October and appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court. Kubheka was already in custody for possession of an unlicensed firearm in Gauteng.
