The eThekwini metro is under fire for not fixing holes in the road that have caused numerous accidents in Durban.
DA councillor Sthembiso Ngema raised concerns about the increasing number of potholes and sinkholes in the metro’s suburbs and townships, some of which were caused by the April 2022 floods.
Ngema blamed the city for the delay in getting asphalt to repair the holes.
“Unrepaired sinkholes pose significant risks to residents, motorists, and pedestrians,” he said.
He wants the city to be more open about buying supplies and to work with local sellers to speed up delivery.
eThekwini spokesperson Gugu Mbonambi-Sisilana said the city faces a nationwide asphalt supply problem.
The city deals with about 2,103 road problems a month, just for fixing potholes and patching cracks.
“The road unit has a two-year plan to check roads for upkeep like fixing cracks and spraying [with asphalt] to make roads last longer,” Sisilana said.
