Residents of Shongoane village in Limpopo protested outside the Phalala Magistrate’s Court on Monday to demand that bail be denied to a 22-year-old father who has been charged with the murder of his two-year-old son.

On Sunday, police found the child’s mutilated body on the bed, with the father holding some of the body parts.

Limpopo SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, said police were alerted about the murder by the community.

“The killing has left the community in shock. The motive behind it is still unknown. However, ritual killing cannot be ruled out,” he said.

Speaking to Scrolla.Africa, community leader Masoka Monyai said the suspect doesn’t deserve to be in the community.

“If he was able to kill his son, allegedly for muthi, what will stop him from killing our children?” Monyai asked.

“If the court fails us by granting him bail, then we will take the law into our own hands to protect our children,” he said.

Major-General Samuel Manala, the acting provincial commissioner of the SAPS in Limpopo, condemned the horrific murder.

“The suspect deserves the harshest sentence possible, and we urge the investigating team to ensure that justice is served,” he said.
