Mpho Wabadimo, the winner of Big Brother Mzansi Season 3, lost her mother, Elizabeth Nonjebo Mvundla two months ago.
To honour her mother, Mpho shaved her head, following a tradition many black families observe during times of grief.
“Our hair is our crown and removing our hair is not a sign of weakness but a sign of respect, honour and recollecting our strength,” she said.
“In honour of my Mom, I shaved off my hair… because our hair carries energies and memories and sometimes trauma and pain that we have experienced in our lives”
Her mother was a strong support system for her.
Recently, Mpho opened up on Instagram about how grief has changed her life.
“There is something about grief that changes you forever. Not only do you grieve the loss of your loved one, but you also grieve who you were before your loss,” she wrote on Instagram.
She said cutting her hair helped her release the emotional pain and trauma she carried and allowed her to heal.
Mpho said that even though grief can be overwhelming, it can also help people grow and find new strength.
“It is like a phoenix rising from the ashes,” Mpho wrote.
“It is a regaining of power through the healing process.”
In her message, she thanked grief for the lessons it brought her, calling it both a loss and a rebirth of her soul.
“Dear Grief, I thank you, you took away my life but you also gave birth to my soul,” she wrote.
