Mthandeni Manqele’s latest song, Gucci, has taken social media by storm, closing in on two million YouTube views just five days after its release.
The track, featuring KZN model and amapiano sensation Mawhoo (Thandeka Ngema), has dominated online platforms since its Friday debut.
Ngema, known for her music video appearances and modelling work, has previously collaborated with big names like DJ Maphorisa and Master KG.
Mkhuliseni Mdletshe, a relative of Manqele’s and head of his fan group, told Scrolla.Africa that the song had silenced critics who’ve often overlooked the artist.
“This song shows that Mthandeni is a force in the music industry. He’s been snubbed for awards but keeps raising the bar,” he said.
Mdletshe, talking about last year’s uKhozi FM New Year’s Eve Crossover award controversy, claimed Mthandeni’s music has been sidelined in favour of Khuzani Mpungose.
On Saturday, Mthandeni’s fans disrupted the uMbuso waMaciko’s Maskandi Festival in Durban to protest his absence.
Mdletshe says Mthandeni wasn’t invited, which many people questioned.
As fans protested, Gucci went viral after its September 27 release.
