Gabadinho Mhango, Malawi’s top striker, was involved in a car crash in Johannesburg over the weekend when his vehicle collided with a Quantum minibus.
Reports suggest that he may have been drinking at the time of the incident. It is also reported that four women were in the car with him.
Fortunately, no one was injured, and Mhango sustained only minor cuts and bruises. He was checked by doctors and later sent home.
“It was a scary moment, but I’m okay. I’ve only sustained a few minor bruises, and I’m grateful that it wasn’t anything more serious,” Mhango told fans.
Journalist Austin Ditlhobolo shared videos and images from the scene of the crash.
Mhango expects to return to playing soon. Fans from both Malawi and South Africa have been sending him many “get well soon” messages.
The Malawi Football Association expressed relief that Mhango was not seriously hurt and wished him a speedy recovery.
Mhango has previously faced disciplinary issues related to alcohol at his former clubs, AmaZulu and Swallows.
Meanwhile, his current team, Marumo Gallants, secured their first win of the season, though Mhango was not part of the matchday squad.
