Easy access to illegal guns in KwaZulu-Natal has once again ended in tragedy with two learners dead at Hlangabeza High School in Kranskop in KwaZulu-Natal.

This follows an incident on Wednesday where a 23-year-old male learner allegedly shot a 17-year-old girl and later turned the gun on himself before police could arrest him for the murder.

Njabulo Mabaso allegedly used an illegal gun to shoot and kill Londeka Mahlaba. They both lived a stone’s throw away from the Kranskop police station.

According to local residents, Mabaso and Mahlaba were in a relationship that later soured.

“They were in a relationship and it is suspected that things were not going well, hence the boy (Mabaso) shot the girl (Mahlaba,” a local leader told Scrolla.Africa

The murder is said to have shocked residents and caused a rift between the two families who are from the same village.

The killings come after reports of gun violence inside and outside schools in Gauteng and the Western Cape that has left some learners injured and some dead.

At last weekend’s King Shaka’s Day festivities in Stanger, KZN, King MisuZulu kaZwelithini bemoaned the prevalence of guns and violence in the province.

Repeated attempts to get an official comment about the incident from Muzi Mahlambi, the spokesperson of the Department of Education, failed as he did not respond to calls.
