Police have arrested the man who shot an e-hailing driver in Berea, Johannesburg.

The 26-year-old suspect was found on Thursday at Jabulani Hostel in Soweto. He was still wearing the same clothes from the day of the shooting.

Xolani Fihla, spokesperson for the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), said the arrest was made by JMPD and SAPS teams.

“The suspect was identified based on information received regarding the fatal shooting incident that occurred on Lilly and Olivia Streets in Berea,” said Fihla.

Police found the suspect sleeping in a room at the hostel.

“He was positively identified as matching the description obtained from surveillance footage and was still wearing the same clothing as seen at the crime scene,” Fihla added.

An unlicensed gun, magazine, and 10 bullets were found with the suspect.

He’s now at Jabulani police station, facing murder charges. He’ll appear in court soon.

Fihla praised the teamwork between JMPD and SAPS in catching the suspect.

“We commend the collaborative efforts of the JMPD TRU unit and the SAPS Gauteng Tracking Team in bringing this dangerous individual to justice.”
