Two elderly St John’s Church leaders were killed in the Lusaka section of Nyanga in Cape Town on Tuesday night.

The 77-year-old man and his 70-year-old wife were shot in the head while having supper at home.

A resident who was on the church’s premises at the time and wanted to remain anonymous said the killers approached the couple, pretending to need help.

“The victims have been helping anyone, even if they are not church members, and that is why they didn’t have a problem when they saw the men arriving at their home,” he said.

The resident believes the killers might be the same people who burned the church three years ago, killing the couple’s son.

A church member shared their fear and confusion: “We are afraid and left with so many questions. Who would kill elderly people like this? What did they do to be killed like this?”

Dumisani Qwebe from the Nyanga community policing forum said the killings were a sad reflection of crime in the townships and urged churches to speak up.

“Churches are quiet. They need to stand up. Their silence gives power to the devil. We need to pray harder as this is not the first time that church leaders have been murdered,” he said.

Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said police were searching for the two unknown suspects.

Both victims died at a medical facility.
