Cilliers Brink has lost his job as Tshwane’s mayor. On Thursday, 120 councillors voted to remove him, while 87 voted for him to stay.
The vote happened after the DA’s partnership with ActionSA fell apart.
Now, it’s not clear who will run the city.
The city council will set a date to choose and swear in a new mayor, with reports suggesting one could be elected on Friday.
DA spokesperson Kwena Moloto said Brink’s removal is bad for Tshwane.
“The withdrawal of ActionSA from the Tshwane multi-party coalition has plunged the City of Tshwane into political instability, and now threatens the future of the capital city. The DA will, however, not abandon Tshwane residents,” Moloto said.
The DA plans to nominate Brink again for mayor.
“The DA will field him again as a mayoral candidate in a subsequent election. If we do not win, we will return to the opposition benches,” Moloto said.
Moloto praised Brink’s work, saying he fixed the city’s money problems.
“Before this power grab, the Tshwane metro had a budget surplus of R200-million, but the ANC provincial administrators, including a former West Rand district mayor, left the city with a budget deficit exceeding R4-billion,” Moloto said.
