Police catch men trying to blackmail Schumacher family

German police have arrested three men for trying to get money from Michael Schumacher’s family.

Schumacher, perhaps the most famous racing driver in the history of Formula One, was severely injured while skiing in 2013. He has been on life support from that time and hasn’t been seen since.

A 53-year-old German man threatened to show private pictures of Michael if the Schumachers didn’t pay 15-million euros (about R300-million), AFP reported.

The pictures, from before and after Schumacher’s accident, came from a former security

guard. The guard could face extended jail time.

The German man called the family numerous times in June, demanding money. His 30-year-old son helped him to send some pictures via a secret email account.

The Schumachers didn’t give in. They told Swiss police, who found the men by tracing the phone calls.

All three men might go to jail. The main suspect could get up to 15 years, although it will probably be less because he didn’t share the pictures publicly.
