Cape Town police shot and killed three extortion suspects and arrested four others on Wednesday.

Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut said: “The Combat Team reacted to information that seven occupants of a minibus taxi were extorting money from shop owners in Dunoon. The police investigated, and the suspects were spotted fleeing the area.”

The men shot at police with an assault rifle during a chase on Bosmansdam Road. Police returned fire, stopping the vehicle.

“The assault rifle, a 9mm pistol, cash, as well as the minibus taxi, were confiscated,” Traut said.

The injured suspects are under police guard in hospital. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate is looking into the deaths and injuries.

“If we knew that the GNU would do wonders like this, we could’ve voted differently,” said an anonymous resident.

“The results [in tackling crime] we are experiencing now is because the political parties are working together to make South Africa a better place.

“So many homes have been left without the breadwinners, and kids don’t have fathers because of the criminals who murdered their [policemen] dads while they were at work. I am happy that the police are now fighting back,” he said.

The Western Cape police encourage extortion victims to use their toll-free hotline: 0800314444.
