Proteas coach Rob Walter is looking ahead to the upcoming series against Ireland with a positive mindset despite the team’s 2-1 defeat to Afghanistan last week.

South Africa were outplayed in the first two one-day internationals but returned strong to avoid a whitewash in Sharjah on Sunday.

Ireland will be their opponents for the two-match T20 series in Abu Dhabi on Friday and Sunday before the sides also face off in three ODIs.

Walter believes the team can only get better going into the series.

“I think, obviously, the series result is disappointing, particularly the first two games, where we exposed some of our depth and fringe players,” Walter told reporters.

“Ultimately, we can only get better if we are exposed to tough conditions, and these were tough ones.”

Walter also believes that, despite their defeat by Afghanistan, the team can use the momentum from the final game as they prepare for Ireland.

“The way we finished is a massive positive. I think our fielding throughout the series was also excellent.”

“We’ve had little bits of exciting cricket along the way [against Afghanistan], and in the third game, we potentially brought it together a little bit better. So we’ll certainly take that as a little bit of momentum.”
