A 36-year-old patient at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital in Ga-Rankuwa was found dead on Monday afternoon after hanging herself with a cellphone charger cable in a locked bathroom.
A nurse noticed the locked bathroom door while doing her rounds. After knocking several times and getting no response, she called other nurses for help.
Khutso Rabothata, acting head of communication for the Gauteng health department, said the nurses forced the door open and found the patient hanging by the charger cable.
“They tried to save her life immediately, and a doctor was called, but sadly, she was already dead,” Rabothata said.
The patient had been admitted to the hospital on September 21.
Rabothata added that hospital staff affected by the tragic event are receiving counselling and support.
Police have been informed and are investigating.
