Sihle Mavuso presents the latest news from KwaZulu-Natal.

eThekwini – The eThekwini municipality has blocked eight more companies from bidding on municipal tenders, bringing the total to 32. The move is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to fight corruption. City manager Musa Mbhele explained that the companies were blocked for fraud, corruption, poor performance, and collusive tendering. Some companies also had directors who were government employees, which is not allowed.

Dumbe – The secretary-general of the National Freedom Party (NFP), Teddy Thwala, won another legal battle at the Pietermaritzburg High Court against his suspension by party president Ivan Barnes. The court ruled that Barnes and the NFP’s national executive committee cannot suspend Thwala until the case is fully heard in January next year. Thwala’s suspension followed allegations that he nearly prevented the party from participating in the May 29 elections.

Pietermaritzburg – The EFF in KwaZulu-Natal’s provincial legislature is pressuring the MEC for Education, Sipho Hlomuka, to release much-needed funding for standards and norms to 2,000 no-fee schools. Principals in rural and township schools have reported delays in receiving funds, which has delayed trial exams and preparations for year-end exams.

Durban – Durban University of Technology’s vice-chancellor, Professor Thandwa Mthembu, won a legal battle against his potential suspension by the university council. In another case, the Durban High Court temporarily delayed the start of a forensic report on stalled building projects until the matter was fully heard in January.

Durban – An IEC workshop in Durban said that changing municipal wards every five years before local elections can disrupt planned infrastructure projects. The process sometimes results in projects being moved to different municipalities, leading to issues like residents losing their places on housing lists.
