Student organisations battle it out over gazebos

Tensions are growing at the Tshwane University of Technology between the ANC-linked South African Students Congress (Sasco) and the EFF Student Command (EFFSC).

On Wednesday, two Sasco gazebos were found burned near the pool area in the afternoon. Later that night, at around 11pm, a video appeared showing an EFFSC gazebo on fire.

Three days before last week’s student elections, two of Sasco’s gazebos went missing, leaving them without shelter while campaigning for votes.

The two student political groups have been fighting since the EFFSC beat Sasco last year to take control of the university’s Soshanguve campus.

A source told Scrolla.Africa that Sasco believes EFFSC members stole their gazebos.

“After finding their gazebos burned, Sasco members stole the EFFSC’s gazebo and set it on fire,” the source said.

One Sasco member, who chose to stay anonymous, accused the EFFSC of trying to cause trouble before the elections.

“We know who they are, and we will handle them. They think they run this campus,” the Sasco member said.

The university has not yet commented on the incidents.
