AmaZulu King Misuzulu KaZwelithini believes his life is in danger and has asked Police Minister Senzo Mchunu for urgent help.
In a letter dated 11 September, the king expressed concern about a senior officer from the Presidential Protection Services (PPS) who is supposed to protect him.
The king requested that this officer be removed immediately, News24 reported.
King Misuzulu feels that his safety has been compromised, with reports suggesting a lack of trust between him and the officer, who has been with him for two years.
Some sources hinted at a possible affair within the royal household, which may have exacerbated the situation.
In the letter, King Misuzulu expressed his dissatisfaction with how his security was being handled, particularly the removal of the Counter-Assault Team without his consent.
Sources claim that the officer’s actions have endangered the king’s life, with allegations that the officer sometimes leaves him without protection and disobeys orders.
This is not the first time the king’s safety has been a concern. In 2021, the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi raised the alarm when police withdrew VIP protection from the king.
King Misuzulu’s journey to the throne has been marred by family disputes, with some members of the AmaZulu royal family supporting his half-brother, Prince Simakade, as the rightful heir.
However, President Cyril Ramaphosa officially recognised Misuzulu as king in October 2022.
Some believe that politicians may be involved in attempts to undermine the king’s authority over the control of Ingonyama Trust land.
AmaZulu Prime Minister Thulasizwe Buthelezi and Minister Mchunu’s office declined to comment, stating that it is illegal to discuss the king’s security in public.
