A 68-year-old woman and her five grandchildren were killed in a fire in the early hours of Thursday morning in New Brighton, Gqeberha.

Police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge said the fire started at about 4am on Thursday.

“On arrival in Chris Hani informal settlement … a completely destroyed shack was found. The fire department put out the rest of the flaming debris, and a discovery was made of the burnt out bodies of an adult female and five children.

“[They are] believed to be the remains of a grandma, 68, and her five grandchildren aged between four and 11 years old,” Beetge said.

An inquest docket was opened and is being investigated by New Brighton police.

“Formal identification of the six deceased will need to be conducted by forensic analysis [DNA] and no names can be released at this stage,” Beetge said.

In August, another Gqeberha family perished when their Missionvale home caught fire.

Two parents and their three children died in the blaze.
