Upset members of the ANC in Ekurhuleni are insisting that party secretary-general Fikile Mbalula cancel his decision to extend the mandate of the regional task team (RTT).
Last Tuesday, Mbalula emailed ANC Gauteng secretary TK Nciza and RTT coordinator Jongizizwa Dlabathi to announce the extension of the RTT.
The RTT was appointed in October 2023 after a court ruling disbanded the elected regional executive committee.
On Wednesday, Ekurhuleni ANC members Nsizwa Mekgwe and Joel Ngulele sent a letter to the national office through their lawyers, stating that they only found out about the decision on social media on 17 September.
“The extension was not approved by the party’s National Office Bearers, National Working Committee, or National Executive Committee. It is improper and wrong,” the letter said.
The members are also concerned that no steps have been taken, a year after the court ruling, to organise an ANC conference in the region.
They have given Mbalula until Friday, 20 September, to withdraw the extension or face legal action.
A source in the party said tensions began when Pheliswa Nkunjana was elected as the new chief whip of the Ekurhuleni council without informing the caucus.
“Those who were upset wanted either a conference soon or changes to the RTT so they could be appointed,” the source said.
Nciza confirmed receiving the legal notice: “Since this is a legal matter, we are waiting for instructions from the national office.”
