Police in KwaZulu-Natal are asking for the public’s help to arrest Linda Hlongwa, known in the community as “Mjinja” or “Putin”.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said: “‘Putin’ is wanted in connection with cases of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.”

Hlongwa was arrested in July 2020 after being found in possession of a firearm and ammunition in Mariannhill and was released from custody while police awaited ballistic results.

“Since then, he has ignored summons to appear in court to face his charges,” Netshiunda said.

“Putin” is wanted for more than just the firearm charges.

He is allegedly involved in several extortion cases, where he has been “terrorising business people in and around the Mariannhill area,” according to Netshiunda.

The Pinetown Magistrate’s Court issued Hlongwa’s arrest warrant on 9 September.

Police are appealing to anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact investigating officer Sergeant Gwala at 079 889 9733 or use the crime stop number 08600 10111.
