Learners at Shushu High School in KwaBhaca are calling for justice after their classmate, Fisokuhle Sibhobhi, was beaten with a steel rod by a security guard.

Sibhobhi and her classmates were studying late for their Physical Science exam.

After they finished at 10pm on Wednesday, she realised she had left her calculator in the classroom and went back to get it.

Her roommate, Aphid Maki, said they heard screams as they returned to their rooms.

“We saw the security guard hitting her with a steel rod. We tried to stop him, but he chased us away, saying he would kill her,” Maki explained.

A group of boys tried to help but couldn’t stop the guard because he was too violent.

Eastern Cape Education MEC Fundile Gade confirmed that officials visited the victim’s family on Saturday and opened a case against the security guard, Bulelani Daluka, 42.

Police spokesperson Captain Welile Matyholo said Daluka was arrested on Saturday and charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Sibhobhi was seriously injured and taken to hospital. Daluka appeared in court on Monday, and the case was postponed to 23 September. He remains in police custody.

MEC Gade condemned the attack: “We must protect our children, not harm them. The recent cases of learners being hurt at school are worrying, and we will do everything we can to bring justice.”
