An angry Jacob Zuma threatened to fire misbehaving members of the uMkhonto Wesizwe Party (MK) during a memorial service for six women from the party who died in a car accident last month.
The memorial was held on Saturday at Wembezi Stadium in the UThukela District.
The former president became angry when some MK members disrupted speeches by shouting and booing certain leaders who were offering support to the families of the women.
Zuma took the stage and warned the disruptive members, saying he could fire them right there for embarrassing the party.
“We are telling people that as MK, we want to help lead the country. But if we behave badly, shouting and using bad language in public, how can people trust us? This is a disgrace, and I could expel all of you right now for bringing shame to the organisation,” said Zuma.
Other MK leaders also used the memorial to share their frustrations. Former MK Youth Leader Bonginkosi Khanyile criticised some leaders for trying to control the Youth League for their own benefit.
He claimed some leaders were taking young members to hotels to influence them with ideas that bring division in the party.
“I want to name these people, but I won’t do it out of respect for ubaba Jacob Zuma,” said Khanyile.
Khanyile also complained that some people block anyone trying to meet with Zuma, making it difficult for MK leaders to speak with him. He said this issue has been going on for a long time.
In the past, sources claimed that even Zuma’s legal team had trouble meeting him due to similar interference.
The funeral for the six MK women has not yet been set yet, as DNA tests are still being processed since the women were burned beyond recognition in the accident.
