The new PSL season kicks off on Saturday, with Kaizer Chiefs’ trip to Marumo Gallants taking centre stage.
All eyes will be on the Soweto giants at Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein. They have gone nine years without a trophy.
Fans are eager to see if Kaizer Chiefs have improved, and a strong start to the season could be crucial for coach Nasreddine Nabi’s squad.
Chiefs defender Given Msimango spoke about the importance of a solid start.
“Here at Chiefs, it is important to start well. This will set the tone and momentum for the rest of the games,” he said.
Nabi is expected to start new signings, such as defenders Inacio Miguel, Bradley Cross, Rushwin Dortley and midfielders Gaston Sirino and Njabulo Blom.
Their opponents, Marumo Gallants, recently purchased Moroka Swallows’ PSL status and have strengthened their squad with former Chiefs players Phathutshedzo Nange and Kamohelo Mahlatsi, as well as ex-Orlando Pirates star Xola Mlambo.
Meanwhile, Royal AM will try to overcome their Fifa transfer ban when they host Cape Town City at Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg.
Polokwane City aims for another top-eight finish as they face AmaZulu at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
On Sunday, Richards Bay, who narrowly avoided relegation last season, will host TS Galaxy at King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi.
Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns will focus on the CAF Champions League, missing out on the domestic opening weekend.
