The 25 ANC Ekurhuleni task team members have been given nine more months in office to stabilise and rebuild party membership and branches in the metro before the 2026 local elections.
The task team’s term had expired, but the party’s national executive committee extended it to 10 June 2025, when the regional conference to elect a new leadership will be held.
In a letter to regional task team (RTT) coordinator Jongizizwe Dlabathi, ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula said: “The RTT mandate is extended to a further nine months with effect from 10 September 2024 until 10 June 2025.
“This is to enable the RTT to rebuild the ANC structures and take the region to regional conference.”
The regional task team was appointed on 10 October 2023 following a court ruling directing the national office to appoint it, as the previous regional executive committee was disbanded through a court judgment.
Disgruntled party members had gone to court alleging unfair processes, including auditing and verifying members, leading up to the 2022 regional conference.
The national working committee (NWC) appointed 25 members to the RTT, and the current metro mayor, Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, was appointed as convener.
Eric Xayiya was appointed deputy convenor, the MMC of finance, Dlabathi, as co-ordinator, Moipone Mhlongo as his deputy and Absalom Budeli as fundraiser.
The ANC has been on a national campaign to regain and rebuild itself, especially in Gauteng and KZN, after its poor performance in the 29 May elections.
The party has regained control of Joburg and Ekurhuleni and is fighting to win Tshwane through a coalition government.
During an NWC visit to the metro at the weekend, ANC deputy president Paul Mashatile said the party is working on reclaiming stability in municipalities that are not working properly.
“There were a number of branches that were not active during the election campaign; one of the mandates is to revive them,” he said.
“We have also picked up that there are issues of service delivery, and we are happy that the ANC mayor has put up a team to deal with the challenges.”
