The IFP-aligned student organisation, the South African Democratic Students Movement (Sadesmo), used ice cream to tempt voters in the SRC elections at Tshwane University of Technology.

On Wednesday, Sadesmo went to the Manhattan student residence with a simple strategy: “Vote Sadesmo and get an IFP T-shirt and ice cream.”

Other student groups were also trying to win votes.

The MK Youth League gave female students a pack of sanitary pads and a T-shirt for voting.

The EFF Student Command was also busy on campus, handing out T-shirts and trying to convince students to support them.

Meanwhile, the ANC-aligned South African Students Congress, which competes with the EFF Student Command in Ga-Rankuwa, was less active, with members sitting in the shade in a tent with T-shirts on the table.

The Student Christian Organisation, which doesn’t campaign much, remains a surprise as it usually wins a seat despite staying largely invisible during this election.

The final results will be announced on Thursday afternoon.

By lunchtime on Thursday, 60% of the students had voted, with 3,444 out of 5,742 students at the Ga-Rankuwa campus casting their votes.
