Bafana Bafana manager Hugo Broos says Percy Tau was left out of the squad for this week’s Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers because he is not mentally ready.

South Africa take on Uganda and South Sudan during the international break, and Tau not being in the squad surprised many.

The 30-year-old forward has recently been unsettled at his club, Al Ahly, and Broos told the media that the player knows why he was not selected for the national team.

“He knows why he is not with us, and there is no problem. The fact that he doesn’t agree is another issue, and it is a good thing that he disagrees with me because it means that he wants to play for Bafana Bafana,” the manager said.

Tau faced backlash for his performances at the last Afcon, and Broos said that this impacted his mental state.

“I know the criticism he gets after some of the Bafana games, so don’t tell me it doesn’t affect you. I have experience because I have been criticised as a player and coach.”

“You can say that it doesn’t affect you; it stays in the back of your mind, and there is also the situation at Al Ahly. You can’t tell me the situation is clear at Al Ahly because it is not.”

“It is not clear because he hasn’t played for the last four weeks. There is a problem with the coach; I know this because I read about it in the papers. I don’t think he will be mentally ready for these two important and intensive matches against Uganda and South Sudan.”
