An EFF member in Tshwane, Lebogang Mafa, was shot and killed while sitting in her dining room with her son on Sunday night.

It is alleged four suspects forced access to the home while one remained outside and without saying anything, one suspect opened fire at Mafa, shooting her three times in her upper body.

She was declared dead at the scene.

The son was able to identify the suspect who is known to the family.

The suspect appeared before the Pretoria North Court facing charges of murder, attempted murder and housebreaking.

The matter has been postponed to 4 December for further investigation.

The other three suspects are still on the run.

Speaking to Scrolla.Africa, Ward 90 councillor Queen Chauke said though they are happy the man has been arrested and detained in police custody, they want the son to be taken into witness protection.

“We fear for his life as the other three suspects are still on the run and could come back to finish what they have started.

“The suspects have shown that they are heartless for killing his mother in cold blood in front of him. What would stop them from killing him now?” she said.

Chauke said the senseless killing comes just at the end of Women’s Month and as the country is fighting gender based violence and femicide.

“We are pleading to the police to hunt down the three suspects who are currently on the run and for the court to impose a harsh sentence,” she said.

EEF Tshwane regional chairperson Obakeng Ramabodi said the incident paints the grim reality that Soshanguve has become a hotbed of crime.

“Our communities are besieged by violence and the sense of safety has been eroded.

“Trauma was inflicted on her son, who witnessed the senseless killing of his mother,” he said.
