Crime bites: Man sentenced to life for killing girlfriend

Sbongile Nonyana presents the latest crime news from around South Africa. 

Mthatha – A 35-year-old man from Mthatha, Bantubenkosi Siqotyana, has been sentenced to life in prison for murdering his girlfriend, Nontobeko Thobigunya. He killed her in December 2023 and dumped her body parts in different pit toilets.

Kwaggafontein – Police in Kwaggafontein found a body near the R573 road that was missing some parts. The reason for the killing is unknown, and no one has been arrested yet.

Kimberley – David van Wyk, 21, was sentenced to 14 years and six months in prison by the Kimberley Magistrates’ Court on 20 August. He was caught cutting a signal cable on a Transnet railway in Cassandra in March 2024 and found guilty of damaging critical infrastructure.

Odendaalsrus – Police in Odendaalsrus are asking for help to find 54-year-old Mathe Adira Notsi, who has been missing since January. A neighbour reported her missing on 20 August. She was last seen visiting her boyfriend in Kutlwanong.

Harrismith – Police in Harrismith are investigating after finding four bodies inside a burnt truck on a gravel road between Mabate and Tshiame on 26 August. The truck belonged to a 35-year-old man from Makwane village in Qwaqwa.

Rustenburg – Two security officers driving a cash-in-transit truck were hijacked on Monday while driving on the N4 road near the Marikana off-ramp in Rustenburg in the North West. Their truck was forced off the road by a black Mercedes-Benz, and the suspects then shot at the officers and bombed the truck. The robbers escaped with an unknown amount of cash. A rifle and 22 rounds of ammunition were found at the scene.
