Gogo Noweyitala Ndolomane, known as Mamntlane on TikTok, received a new house on Tuesday.
Mamntlane, 97, is famous for her funny and heartwarming chats with her granddaughter Siyavuya Mketo on TikTok.
Fans loved her TikToks so much that they sent her groceries, clothes and household items.
After seeing Mamntlane’s old rondavel, where she lived with her 60-year-old son and two grandchildren, her fans, calling themselves “abazukulwana” (grandchildren), raised R17,000 to help.
Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane called Mketo, promising to build a new house for Mamntlane.
On Tuesday, Mabuyane and Human Settlements MEC Siphokazi Lusithi handed over the keys to the fully furnished house in Kulokhala, Willowvale, to a delighted Mamntlane.
Mabuyane said this was part of a programme to provide decent housing for the vulnerable, including older people.
“This case came to our attention through social media. We promised to build and hand over her house during Mandela Month. We commend her grandchildren for taking care of her,” said Mabuyane.
Overjoyed at her new home, Mamntlane said: “Thank you to the government and everyone who told my story and helped my family.”
At the handover event, officials introduced a new contractor to build 250 houses for more families in the Mbashe local municipality.
