Mzansi has expressed outrage after rapper Big Zulu landed a role on the new MTV Shuga documentary series, “What Makes a Man?” The show tackles the subject of Gender-Based Violence as a collective societal issue and will premiere on MTV Base on March 1.

Many South Africans on social media were not happy that Big Zulu will be featured on the program, given that he was previously arrested in 2018 for allegedly attacking his girlfriend and mother of his then two-year-old daughter.

The fact that former Metro FM deejay Bujy Bikwa also landed a role on the doccie-series also made the situation worse. Bujy made the headlines last year when he allegedly attacked Boity following an altercation at the Courtyard Hotel opposite the Mall of Africa in Midrand, Gauteng. Pictures of the injured Boity trended on social media and resulted in massive condemnation for Bujy.

South Africans on social media have decried MTV’s decision to feature two people with bad records on GBV in the “What Makes a Man?” documentary series. They argued that the move makes it seem like perpetrators of GBV are being rewarded and not being held accountable for their actions. According to some social media users, this proves that South Africa hates women.

Some social media users, however, defended Big Zulu and Bujy, saying that they had paid for their actions. They argued that no one is beyond redemption and called on people to give Big Zulu a second chance.

However, this narrative was challenged by some social media users who said that despite the alleged redemption, Big Zulu and Bujy should not appear to be rewarded for their GBV violations.

it’s embarrassing for us as a country. But ke our voices are never loud enough, such will continue to happen. Abusers are thriving in the media industry in SA cos the industry protects them so producers can milk the situation (to get a reaction out of black Twitter & trend).

Bujy should be nowhere near that show , it’s like having a paedophile on a kiddies show. How can you bring someone who literally hit a woman with a bottle , to a show about gender-based violence? It’s bad taste to be honest.

There are sooooooooo many people, even celebrities who have been victims of GBV and this is the best they could do?

If he feels as though his side of things need to be heard, then he can be on a Mojalove show. Real victims need to be heard.

God dammit people are acting holier than thou here. What TH? Can’t we counsel people instead of trying to cancel them. I’d understand a perpetual perpetrator deserves a lifetime ban from society. We’re people after all & we do make mistakes. Cancel Celebs strategy is not working!

how is it possible that Bujy and Big Zulu who laid their hands on women are chosen to speak about GBV???
