The High Court in Polokwane has convicted and sentenced Tlou James Mashita, a 54-year-old man, for the brutal murder of his 43-year-old girlfriend, Nkedu Merriam Vilakazi.
The incident took place in September 2016 in the Waterberg District, specifically at Tshamahansi Village under the Mahwelereng policing area.

On the fateful day, Mashita attacked Vilakazi with an axe at her residence. Vilakazi, an administration clerk employed at Mahwelereng SAPS, succumbed to her severe injuries at the scene.

Following the heinous act, Mashita fled the crime scene, driving the deceased’s grey Nissan NP200 bakkie.

The lifeless body of Vilakazi was later discovered by her daughter, who promptly reported the matter to the local police. An immediate manhunt for the killer was activated, leading to Mashita’s apprehension. He was found driving the deceased woman’s vehicle in the Seshego location.
Mashita initially appeared in the Mahwelereng Magistrate’s Court, but his case was provisionally withdrawn on June 13, 2018. However, further investigations and legal proceedings led to his conviction and sentencing by the High Court in Polokwane.
