  • A 32-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the alleged rape of an 11-year-old girl in the Western Cape.
  • The arrest follows public outrage after reports emerged that the child had allegedly given birth as a result of sexual abuse involving someone known to the family.
  • The girl’s mother has also been arrested for allegedly failing to report the sexual offence.

Police have arrested a 32-year-old man who allegedly raped an 11-year-old girl in the Western Cape.

The suspect was arrested on Friday and is expected to make his first court appearance at the Atlantis Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 18 May 2026.

His arrest comes after residents of Atlantis expressed outrage after it emerged that an 11-year-old girl had given birth, allegedly as a result of sexual abuse involving someone known to the family.

According to media reports, the suspect is the child’s mother’s boyfriend.

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk confirmed that the mother has also been arrested and has already appeared before the court.

“Yes, we can confirm that the mother of an 11-year-old appeared at the Atlantis Magistrate’s Court charged with failure to report the commission of a sexual offence,” said Van Wyk.

The case against her has been postponed to Tuesday, 19 May 2026.

The identities of all parties involved in the case cannot be disclosed in order to protect the minor child.
