  • A total of 211 motorists were arrested for drunk driving in Gauteng between 16 and 22 February 2026.
  • The arrests were made during JMPD roadblocks, roving patrols and targeted enforcement operations.
  • Authorities say a zero-tolerance approach will continue, warning that motorists who drink and drive will be arrested.

At least 211 motorists have been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in Gauteng in just one week.

The arrests were made between 16 February and 22 February 2026 through the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD)’s roadblocks, roving patrols and targeted enforcement operations.

JMPD spokesperson, Xolani Fihla, said officers maintained a high-visibility presence across all regions of the city as part of ongoing efforts to curb lawlessness and reduce road fatalities.

“As part of our ongoing efforts to curb lawlessness and reduce road fatalities, our officers have maintained a high-visibility presence across all regions of the city,” said Fihla.

He added that each of the 211 arrests represents a motorist who chose to prioritise their own convenience over the lives of others.

“Driving under the influence is not a ‘mistake’; it is a deliberate act of negligence that endangers innocent residents and visitors,” he said.

Fihla stressed that the department’s zero-tolerance approach remains in full effect.

“Every arrest made is a potential tragedy averted, and we will continue to deploy our resources 24/7 to ensure that our roads are safe,” he said.

Motorists have been urged to take personal responsibility for their safety and that of other road users on Johannesburg’s roads.

“There will be no leniency for those who choose to disregard the law. If you drink and drive, you will be arrested,” Fihla warned.
