21 years commemoration for the Ellis Park Stadium Stampede


The Soweto Derby is one of the biggest in the world, and on a fateful day in 2001, it turned deadly. The Ellis Park Stadium disaster was a crowd crush that occurred on 11 April 2001, claiming the lives of 43 people.
An inquiry blamed bribed security personnel admitting fans without tickets into the stadium & poor crowd control. The stadium meant to accommodate at least 60 000 fans was filled with over 90 000 fans.
However, reports suggest a further 30,000 more fans were trying to gain entry into the ground.
The Premier Soccer League paid R15,000 to each family to cover funeral costs followed by R7,500 towards a trust fund.
Kaizer Chiefs club extended its condolences in a tweet on Monday, 21 April, expressing how hurt the team was about the 43 victims who lost their lives.
“Chiefs Remember Ellis Park 43 It is truly a day that remains in our hearts. The Kaizer Chiefs Family extends its deepest sympathies to the bereaved families and wishes that the departed continue to rest in eternal peace. Gone But Not Forgotten”
Orlando Pirates also made a tribute video to commemorate the Ellis Park Stadium disaster.
