Watch the highlights of the 198th derby between Cape schools Bishops and Rondebosch at the Piley Rees Rugby Field.
Rondebosch put in a massive second half effort to overcome a massive 5-point deficit to claim a 15-20 victory against their old foe Bishops in windy conditions on Saturday, 11 June at the Piley Rees.
Bishops made massive strides from the very first kick-off, but it was the calmness and discipline of the Rondebosch players that allowed them to edge their neighbours in the end, despite Rondebosch not scoring any points in the first half.
In the proverbial the game of two halves, Bishops dominated the opening stanza, but a resurgent Rondebosch came out fighting in the second half and it was that performance which proved to be the deciding factor as they completed a thrilling comeback win.
The home side came out firing on all cylinders, and after a sensational period of sustained attacked in the opening 10 minutes, Bishops crossed the tryline for two quick scores courtesy of speedster Jack Ryan. Pivotal and notable in both of these five-pointers was loose forward Olo Sopotela, the talented flanker showed great skill and pace to outsmart the Rondebosch defence on numerous occasions.
Three unanswered second half tries for Rondebosch along with two late yellow cards for Bishops shifted the momentum well and truly away from home side as their discipline — or lack thereof — in critical moments saw them collapse to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
