  • A 16-year-old was apprehended in Roodepoort following an intelligence-driven operation into the illegal trade of explosives.
  • Police recovered 50 blasting cartridges along with fuses and detonating cords intended for distribution within local criminal networks.
  • Detectives are now working to identify the suppliers behind the cache, which is linked to violent robberies and illicit mining.

South African Police Service (SAPS) National Intervention Unit and Gauteng Crime Intelligence officers have arrested a 16-year-old teenager in Roodepoort.

The arrest followed an intelligence-led operation targeting a criminal network suspected of distributing explosives in and around the Mohlakeng area.

During the raid at a secondary address, officers discovered and seized a significant cache of dangerous materials.

The haul included 50 blasting cartridges, 25 safety fuse connectors, and several detonating cords.

Authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to uncover the wider criminal syndicate behind the supply chain.

Such explosives are frequently used in high-stakes crimes, including cash-in-transit robberies and illegal mining operations, posing a severe threat to public safety.
