15 Gauteng learners hospitalised after consuming “space cakes”

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng MEC for Education has issued a warning to Gauteng learners to not consume “space cakes” after 15 learners were hospitalised in the province.

According to the Department of Education, 11 Grade 12 learners from Randfontein High School and 4 Grade 12 learners from Mamellong Secondary School is Tsakane, Brakpan were hospitalised over the past few day.

Learners reportedly consumed “space cakes”, baked muffins and brownies that are laced with cannabis and/or other intoxicating substances.

The cakes were sold to learners by another Grade 12 Randfontein High learner who is now facing suspension for breaking the school’s code of conduct and endangering the lives of fellow students.

Learners from Mamellong reportedly obtained the cakes from the Grade 12 learner while they were on their way to tuition classes.

Of the 11 Randfontein High learners hospitalised, 2 were discharged while 9 remain in hospital, one remains in a critical but stable condition.

“We urge learners to refrain from purchasing or consuming unknown substances that put their health and lives at risk. The conditions of the learners are being monitored to ensure their speedy recovery and safe return home to their families.”
