  • The JMPD arrested 121 motorists for drunk driving during Easter weekend operations in Johannesburg.
  • Authorities say the arrests highlight ongoing disregard for road safety, despite intensified enforcement.
  • Two fatalities were also recorded, prompting renewed calls for caution from both motorists and pedestrians.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) arrested at least 121 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol during the Easter weekend.

All suspects were arrested as part of the JMPD’s Intensified Easter Safety Operations.

“While our primary goal is to ensure a safe holiday period for all, recent enforcement statistics highlight a persistent disregard for road safety by some motorists.

Our officers have been deployed at various strategic points to clamp down on driving under the influence,” said JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla.

Fihla reminded motorists that there is no justification for placing innocent lives in danger on South African roads.

Fatalities

Two deaths were recorded at the start of the Easter weekend in the metro:

  • Thursday, 02 April 2026: Officers attended to a fatal accident involving a pedestrian.
  • Good Friday, 03 April 2026: A fatal accident occurred involving a passenger.

The JMPD conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased.

As we move into the remainder of the long weekend, we urge all road users to exercise extreme caution. Pedestrians are reminded to remain visible and use designated crossing points, while motorists must adhere to speed limits and avoid alcohol before getting behind the wheel,” Fihla added.

“Our operations will remain in full force across all regions to ensure the safety of our community.”
